What is Kidner procedure?

Kidner procedure is a surgery which is performed to remove an extra bone from foot. The bone to be removed in patients is named as accessory navicular bone. This bone is not present in all people but only a few are born with this extra bone. It is only removed if there is any injury or pain in this abnormal bone. Accessory navicular is considered a prominent abnormal bone which is present in the inner side of foot.

How long does it take to recover from a kidner surgery?

It also depends upon the care of foot. Usually the recovery time recorded is 9 weeks to 2 months. In initial 0 to 6 months, in case of cast boot patient is advised to remain immobilized and must not put weight on foot. Then in next 6 to 10 weeks, the patient is asked to try to increase activity. Physical therapy should accompany for fast recovery and full recovery is achieved after 9 weeks or 2 months when patient is back to his routine activities.

Overview

During this outpatient procedure, the physician removes a problematic accessory navicular bone. The accessory navicular is an abnormal, unnecessary bone found in a small percentage of people. It is located on the inner side of the foot.

Accessing the Accessory Navicular

In preparation for the procedure, the patient is anesthetized and positioned. The surgeon creates an incision just above the foot’s instep. The surgeon examines the anatomy of the patient’s foot.

Removing the Extra Bone

If the patient’s posterior tibial tendon is attached to the accessory navicular, the surgeon carefully detaches this tendon. Then, the surgeon separates the accessory navicular from the navicular bone. The two bones may be connected by fibrous tissue. If so, this tissue must be cut to release the accessory navicular.

Reattaching the Tendon

If the surgeon previously detached the posterior tibial tendon, the surgeon reattaches it to the navicular bone.

End of Procedure

When the procedure is complete, the surgeon closes the incision with sutures or surgical staples. The foot is bandaged and placed in a splint. Crutches may be needed for several days after the surgery. Most patients will be able to resume normal activities within 10-12 weeks.
