Medication

Routine measles vaccination for children, combined with mass immunization campaigns in countries with high case and death rates, are key public health strategies to reduce global measles deaths. The measles vaccine has been in use for over 50 years. It is safe, effective and inexpensive.

Self-care

Immediately place patients with known or suspected measles in an airborne infection isolation room (AIIR). The patient’s facemask could be removed as long as they remain in the AIIR. If an AIIR is not available, transfer the patient as soon as possible to a facility where an AIIR is available.

Nutrition

Patients with measles should remain in Airborne Precautions for 4 days after the onset of rash (with onset of rash considered to be Day 0). Immunocompromised patients with measles should remain in Airborne Precautions for the duration of illness due to prolonged virus shedding in these individuals. [ 3]

What is the recommended treatment for measles?

There's no specific treatment for a measles infection once it occurs. Treatment includes providing comfort measures to relieve symptoms, such as rest, and treating or preventing complications.

There is no medication to treat measles and usually the infection would resolve on its own in two to three weeks. Medication is prescribed to ease the symptoms. In children, who are likely to be deficient in vitamin A the World Health Organization recommends vitamin A supplementation.
