I found it fascinating how we see Joel’s versions of Clementine form within his childhood memories. It shows how wonderfully the brain chooses to make associations with things that are distinctively apart. The review also talks about how beta blockers are a “rudimentary” way of conducting the same function. It has been found that reconsolidating memories uses de novo protein synthesis and if this can be blocked, the problem memory can somehow be stopped from further recall [Tronson, 2007]. I agree with the reviewer that the loss of painful memories can be helpful for patients but also that ESSM has stretched this notion and unfortunately the brain does not hold memories like files in a computer. By “Deleting” the memories all together there is a high risk of not just loss of the negative but a complete loss of every experience associated with that recall. It was no shocker that when I looked up the word ‘Lacuna’ I see it means ‘unfilled space or gap’ which is exactly the kind of dent such a process can have on our brains.
