Last week my husband woke up with stomach pains and within hours was admitted to hospital and had his appendix removed. Lucky for us we were sat at home and not on a cruise from S. Africa to Venice as planned.

If I had to stay onboard is the cruise line expected to support me with knowing which hospital he had been taken to and his progress or would it be down to me calling the Travel insurance people and hoping they work everything out for us.

Friend had heart attack on ship and that night was air lifted by helicopter off the ship to a hospital in San Juan, the closest place. Helicopter only took the patient and a medical worker. The remaining days were sea days and the wife had to stay on board until the ship docked back in Florida, then she took a flight immediately to San Juan.

I have no experience being evacuated myself, but I have 27 years with the USCG, so I have been on the rescue side more times than I can count. There's a 99% chance you would not be allowed to join him on an air medevac. They are constrained by weight, especially the HH65 frames, so do not make a habit out of taking family.

What happens depends on the circumstances but the norm is that the sick/injured person is removed from the ship at the next port and normally accompanied by their companion. Once off the ship they are usually assisted by the local "agent" but may find themselves somewhat alone.

Sekhmet

I should have mentioned another scenario which is what happens if one is evacuated from a ship by helicopter while at sea. This is actually quite rare but it does happen and we have seen it twice on our more then 100 cruises.
