What is SMT used for?

While technically, many different components can be placed, SMT is used almost exclusively for the manufacture of specialized circuit boards. The ease of use and application of SMT technology makes it attractive to industries that want a fully automated production line for their electronic needs. Advanced circuit boards can be designed in advance, and then accurately replicated through the proper application of SMT.

Minor placement errors can render an entire board useless. SMT is also not very compatible with some parts, such as fuses and physically large components. Also, components that are likely to be under large amounts of physical stress aren't good candidates for being manufactured with SMT.
