how you prep for y90 treatment

by Myriam O'Reilly Published 3 years ago Updated 2 years ago

How to Prepare for the Treatment About a month before your Y-90 SIRT treatment, you will have a mapping arteriogram procedure. Mapping arteriogram is done to plan for your Y-90 SIRT treatment.

You will be given a sedative prior to the procedure. You will receive specific instructions on eating and drinking before the procedure and will need to have a relative or friend accompany you and drive you home afterward. The nurse will give you a gown to wear during the procedure.

How long does it take to recover from y90 treatment?

Patients experience few, if any, side effects from Y90 treatment, which is performed in an outpatient setting. Patients generally resume normal activities within one or two weeks. Y90 treatment can be used in combination with traditional treatments for cancer, including surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.

How long does a Y-90 mapping procedure take?

Y-90 radiotherapy is done by an interventional radiologist, a doctor who specializes in procedures that use X-ray guidance. The treatment is done in several steps over a few months. Step 1 is a procedure called a mapping angiogram. It takes 2 to 4 hours.

How long are you radioactive after Y-90?

Once in place, these work by radiating and destroying the surrounding tissue (tumor). These spheres will remain in the tumor and are not removed. The Y90 has a half-life of 64.2 hours. This means that it will be non-radioactive in about a month's time.

What happens after the Y-90 procedure?

After Y-90 Radiotherapy Most patients have some side effects after the Y-90 treatment. These include pain, nausea, a low-grade fever, or chills. This is called post- embolization syndrome. You may have fevers for up to 1 week.

How many times can you have Y-90 treatments?

Patients are typically limited to two treatments, although doctors can take another approach — only with concentrated chemotherapy and larger particles — once radiation limits are reached. “He could potentially have that multiple times to prolong his survival and keep him doing well,” Dr.

Can you be around people after Y-90?

After treatment with Y-90 radioactive material, you will emit a small amount of radiation. These levels are quite low. After treatment, you have no special precautions to follow to limit exposing other people to radiation. It is safe for people to be around you.

What is the success rate of Y-90?

Approximately 70 to 95 percent of the patients will see improvement in the liver and, depending on the type of liver cancer, it may improve survival rates.

Is the Y-90 palliative?

Y-90 radioembolisation is a palliative treatment for primary liver lesions and liver metastatic disease which uses ionising radiation to shrink tumours. It is generally used to relieve the symptoms of liver tumours rather than to cure the underlying condition.

How much does Y-90 treatment cost?

The primary outcome was the overall difference in cost between Y-90 vs TACE for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma at Einstein Medical Center. The price of a Y-90 ranges from $30,000 to $35,000 with an average of $32,500. The price of a TACE ranges from $18,000 to $22,000 with an average of $20,000.

Can radiation shrink liver tumors?

Liver cancer radiation treatment involves the use of high-energy rays that are precisely targeted to destroy cancerous cells and shrink tumors. However, external beam radiation therapy, which is a common form of radiation treatment for other types of cancer, is not usually recommended for treating liver cancer.

Is Y-90 good for liver cancer?

Treating liver cancer with Y-90 SIRT therapy offers patients numerous benefits including. no hospitalization. minimal if any side effects. the ability to resume normal activities within a day or two. Besides offering patients an effective treatment option to control the spread of the cancer in their liver, therapy with Y-90 SIRT also helps patients ...

Is it safe to return home after Y-90?

Very importantly, there is no danger in returning home immediately after the procedure is completed. S ide effects of Y-90 SIRT are usually very mild and the procedure is generally very well tolerated. You may have pain in your abdomen or nausea for 1-2 days.

Can you use Y-90 radiation on liver cancer?

Because the liver is extremely sensitive to radiation damage, this highly precise method of delivering radiation to liver tumors makes it possible for patients with liver cancer to be treated in such a way without causing significant damage to the healthy liver tissue. Such Y-90 SIRT therapy has been shown through many clinical studies conducted ...

What is Y90 treatment?

For patients who are not candidates for surgery—or who are waiting for a liver transplant—Y90 is a treatment option that can alleviate symptoms, slow tumor growth, and extend life. How long before Y90 delivery?

One to two weeks before the delivery of the Y90 to the liver tumors, you will have appointments with your interventional radiologist, who will test your blood and perform an angiogram—an imaging procedure in which dye is injected into the bloodstream and X-ray images are taken.

What to do before radiation?

You will receive detailed instructions about eating, drinking, and taking medications before the procedure. You will need to arrange for someone to accompany you home and to plan for restricted contact with other people, pets, or children after the procedure due to the radiation dose you will be receiving.

Is Y90 radiation safe?

What is Y-90?

Yttrium-90 (Y-90) is a radioactive substance. This means it gives off radiation. It is attached to tiny beads that are smaller than a human hair. These beads are injected (put) into the main artery that brings blood to the liver. The beads get trapped in the tumor and small blood vessels that bring blood to the liver tumor (s).

Y-90 RE beads are used to treat hepatocellular (liver) cancer or other cancers that have spread (metastasized) to the liver.

How is the radioembolization done?

RE is done by a specialist called an interventional radiologist in the interventional radiology department or operating room. Your provider will tell you how to prepare for the procedure, what medications you cannot take before the procedure, and any restrictions you will have.

What restrictions do I have after the procedure?

For the week after your procedure, you will need to limit your contact with other people. This is because they can be exposed to the radiation in your body. You should:

What You Can Expect After the Y-90 Procedure

After the procedure is completed, patients will recover in a separate room of the treatment center for approximately 2 to 6 hours. During that time, patients must keep their leg (the site of the catheter insertion) still to lower the risk of bleeding.

Side Effects of Radioembolization (Y-90)

Side effects of radioembolization (Y-90) are typically mild as the procedure is generally very well tolerated. However, if side effects occur, they are usually transient and most patients resume normal activities within a few days.

Precautions to Take After Y-90 Treatment

Since patients will have received a radioactive treatment, there are a few simple precautions to take following the procedure.

Minimally Invasive Liver Cancer Treatments in New York

What is the best treatment for veno occlusion?

Steroids are the mainstay of therapy. Since the underlying pathophysiology involves veno-occlusion, defibrotide and anticoagulation may be considered. Radioprotectants such as ursodeoxycholic acid and pentoxifylline may also be beneficial.

Is Y-90 a chemoembolization?

The risk is significantly lower with Y-90 than with chemoembolization, likely due to the less embolic nature of radioembolization. Liver abscess is treated with antibiotics and percutaneous drainage.

How Does Y-90 Work?

  • Y-90 radioembolization (RE) works two ways: 1. The beads block off blood vessels, preventing blood flow to the tumor. This is called embolization. Cutting off the blood supply helps kill cancer cells. 2. The beads lodge in the tumor(s) and give off a high dose of radiation to the tumor tissue around them. This kills the tumor but limits the damage ...
