This is the step after toner when we really start to move away from the typical Western-style skincare. The first essence is a very unique Korean skincare step; similar to a toner in function but is more concentrated with beneficial ingredients to supply your skin with nutrients, antioxidants, hydration and moisturisation.
What is the purpose of toner?
First essences do that, and they give our skin a shot of antioxidants + nutrients in the process. More toners are incorporating better ingredients, but most of it is still water + alcohol (this is the case mostly with Western toners and certain Japanese toners).
Is first essence good for exfoliation?
If it feels like your toner isn’t doing much, a first essence can provide better results. The exception to this are toners containing glycolic acid (or any other AHA/BHA) for mild exfoliation.
