Our goal is to protect the lives of all Georgians infected or affected by HIV/AIDS by ensuring access to quality HIV care, expanding prevention services and fostering collaborations throughout the state. New AIDS diagnoses: In 2016, the South accounted for 53% (9,584) of the 18,160 new AIDS diagnoses in the United States, followed by the West (17%, 3,129), the Northeast (17%, 3,088), and the Midwest (13%, 2,359). In 2016, the rate of AIDS diagnoses was 7.8 in the South, 5.5 in the Northeast, 4.1 in the West, and 3.5 in the Midwest.

The paper reports are stored in locked cabinets , and electronic data are stored on a virtual privacy network that requires double key encryption for access. HIV Epidemiology staff abide by strict federal guidelines that prohibit intentional disclosure of HIV/AIDS data and limit risk of accidental disclosure of confidential data.

Is public health surveillance subject to HIPPA?

Public health surveillance activities are not subject to HIPPA restrictions. Georgia has a dual reporting system that legally requires HIV/AIDS reporting by both health care providers and laboratories (O.C.G.A. §31-12-2 (b)) . All health care providers diagnosing and/or providing care to a patient with HIV have the obligation to report them.

All of the information collected by the HIV Epidemiology Section is held strictly confidential. The Section is physically located in a separately locked area of an access-controlled building. Only authorized State HIV Epidemiology staff can enter the area where the information is kept. HIV Epidemiology staff abide by strict federal guidelines that prohibit intentional disclosure of HIV/AIDS data and limit risk of accidental disclosure of confidential data. Furthermore, Georgia law prohibits disclosure of identifiable information; disclosure can result in criminal prosecution charges.

PrEP

For those who do not have HIV and want added protection. PrEP is available by prescription. A healthcare provider can help decide if PrEP is right for you.

Treat

Treatment offers significant health AND preventative benefits for people living with HIV. The amount of virus in the body can be reduced to very low, even undetectable levels.
