Based on population pharmacokinetic modeling, estimates of the median terminal half-lives for the starting and maintenance doses were around 43 days and 28 days, respectively. The long half-life after subcutaneous injection of degarelix is a consequence of a very slow release of the drug from the depot that is formed at the injection site.

Fatigue. Weight gain. Weight loss. These are rare but serious side effects of degarelix: A rare, but serious side effect of degarelix is QT prolongation. You should seek emergency help and notify your health care provider immediately if you develop abnormal heart beats, feel faint, or have shortness of breath.
Does Degarelix work?
You will be checked regularly by your doctor while you are taking degarelix to monitor side effects and check your response to therapy. Periodic blood work will be obtained to monitor your complete blood count (CBC) as well as the function of other organs (such as your kidneys and liver) will also be ordered by your doctor.
Does Degarelix have side effects?
Degarelix side effects will improve after therapy is complete. Degarelix side effects may be quite manageable. There are many options to minimize or prevent the side effects of degarelix. The following side effects are common (occurring in greater than 30%) for patients taking degarelix: Increased liver enzymes.
Does Degarelix reduce testosterone?
By blocking the GnRH receptors, degarelix inhibits the sex hormones' activity and decreases the production of testosterone. Since testosterone stimulates the growth of prostate cancer, the reduction of testosterone improves the prognosis of prostate cancer and decreases its size.
How long does Firmagon last?
Maximum concentrations were seen at 2 days post injection. Firmagon half-life is 53 days, with 20% to 30% excreted renally and 70% to 80% excreted from the hepatobiliary system.
How often do you get a syringe injection?
After that, your doctor will give you an injection of 80 mg every 28 days.
What are the side effects of a syringe?
These side effects happen in between 1 and 10 out of every 100 people (1 to 10%). You might have one or more of them. They include: 1 a drop in red blood cells that can cause breathlessness, tiredness and looking pale 2 weight gain 3 difficulty sleeping or getting to sleep 4 headaches and dizziness 5 diarrhoea 6 feeling sick 7 an increase of liver enzymes in the blood 8 excessive sweating including night sweats 9 rash 10 general discomfort or pain 11 growth of breast tissue (gynaecomastia) - talk to your doctor if this becomes a problem 12 your testicles become smaller 13 you might have problems getting or maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction) - talk to your doctor or nurse if this becomes a problem 14 high temperature 15 chills 16 tiredness (fatigue) 17 flu like symptoms
Does Degarelix slow down prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer depends on testosterone to grow. Drugs that stop the testes making testosterone can slow or stop the growth of prostate cancer cells. Degarelix works by blocking gonadotrophin releasing hormone receptors in the pituitary gland in the brain. The pituitary gland then stops producing luteinising hormone.

Administration Advice: -Administer this drug in the abdominal region only. -Vary the injection site periodically to minimize patient discomfort, and administer in abdomen areas not exposed to pressure (e.g., not close to waistband or belt, not close to the ribs). -Perform a slow, deep subcutaneous injection over 30 seconds. -This drug is for subcutaneous injection only; do not administer intravenously or intramuscularly. -Use this drug only as a first-line androgen deprivation therapy; there is no data available on use of this drug in patients who have failed treatment with GnRH agonists (e.g., leuprorelin, goserelin). -Confirm serum testosterone levels are remaining sufficiently suppressed if a patient's clinical response appears to be sub-optimal. Reconstitution/Preparation Techniques: -Consult the manufacturer product information. General: -This drug has shown to be effective in achieving and maintaining testosterone suppression below the medical castration level of 0.5 ng/mL. -There is no clinical experience with the effects of an acute overdose. Monitoring: -PSA serum concentrations; testosterone serum concentrations of testosterone (if PSA increases) -ECG and electrolytes Patient Advice: -Do not rub, massage, or scratch the injection site..

What is the drug Degarelix?
Degarelix (Firmagon ®) is a hormonal therapy drug used to treat prostate cancer. It is best to read this information with our general information about hormonal therapies and the type of cancer you have.
How many injections of Degarelix are there?
Degarelix is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneously). It is usually given in your tummy. The first time you have it, the nurse will give you 2 injections of the drug. After this, you have 1 injection a month. You usually have the first injection at your hospital clinic appointment.
How long does a hot flush last?
During a flush, your neck and face may feel warm and look red. Flushes may last from a few seconds up to 10 minutes. You may have sweats and then feel cold and clammy. Some people feel anxious or irritable during a hot flush.
Does Degarelix affect blood pressure?
Degarelix may affect blood pressure. Tell your doctor or nurse if you have ever had any problems with your blood pressure. Let them know if you feel dizzy or have any headaches.
