Methadone is offered in pill, liquid, and wafer forms and is taken once a day. Pain relief from a dose of methadone lasts about four to eight hours.

When should methadone be administered?

For the initiation of pain control using oral methadone in the non-tolerant patient, the usual oral dose starts at 2.5 mg to 10 mg every 8 to 12 hours, slowly tolerated to effect.

Is methadone administered intravenously?

In opioid-tolerant patients, the situation may be altered by the development of tolerance to opioid-related adverse reactions. Absorption Methadone Hydrochloride Injection is intended for parenteral (intravenous, subcutaneous and intramuscular) administration.

What happens the first time you take methadone?

At the start of your MAT program, you and your doctor will look for a therapeutic dose of methadone to take. Most patients start with a small dose and will gradually increase to a dose that is appropriate for them. That dose will eliminate physical withdrawals without creating the feelings of euphoria.

Is methadone given by injection?

Methadone oral is taken by mouth. Methadone injection is given in a vein.

Can methadone be administered rectally?

Rectal administration of methadone may be an alternative to intravenous and oral dosing in cancer pain, but the bioavailability of the rectal route is not known.

What does it feel like to be on methadone?

Methadone is a man-made opioid, similar to morphine or heroin. Methadone will cause feelings of relaxation and reduce pain, but it will not give you the same high or euphoric feeling as heroin. It works in treating heroin addiction by reducing the withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

What are the most common side effects of methadone?

Nausea, vomiting, constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness, or sweating may occur. Some of these side effects may decrease after you have been using this medication for a while. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
