Step 1: Consider your aims and approach

Before you can start designing your research, you should already have a clear idea of the research question you want to investigate.

Step 2: Choose a type of research design

Within both qualitative and quantitative approaches, there are several types of research design to choose from. Each type provides a framework for the overall shape of your research.

Step 3: Identify your population and sampling method

Your research design should clearly define who or what your research will focus on, and how you’ll go about choosing your participants or subjects.

Step 4: Choose your data collection methods

Data collection methods are ways of directly measuring variables and gathering information. They allow you to gain first-hand knowledge and original insights into your research problem.

Step 5: Plan your data collection procedures

As well as deciding on your methods, you need to plan exactly how you’ll use these methods to collect data that’s consistent, accurate, and unbiased.

Step 6: Decide on your data analysis strategies

On its own, raw data can’t answer your research question. The last step of designing your research is planning how you’ll analyze the data.

Frequently asked questions about research design

A research design is a strategy for answering your research question. It defines your overall approach and determines how you will collect and analyze data.

What is research design?

The research design refers to the overall strategy that you choose to integrate the different components of the study in a coherent and logical way, thereby, ensuring you will effectively address the research problem; it constitutes the blueprint for the collection, measurement, and analysis of data. Note that the research problem determines the ...

Why is case study research design important?

The case study research design is also useful for testing whether a specific theory and model actually applies to phenomena in the real world.

How does longitudinal research work?

A longitudinal study follows the same sample over time and makes repeated observations. For example, with longitudinal surveys, the same group of people is interviewed at regular intervals, enabling researchers to track changes over time and to relate them to variables that might explain why the changes occur. Longitudinal research designs describe patterns of change and help establish the direction and magnitude of causal relationships. Measurements are taken on each variable over two or more distinct time periods. This allows the researcher to measure change in variables over time. It is a type of observational study sometimes referred to as a panel study.

What is action research?

When practitioners use action research, it has the potential to increase the amount they learn consciously from their experience; the action research cycle can be regarded as a learning cycle. Action research studies often have direct and obvious relevance to improving practice and advocating for change.

What is social science research?

Social scientists, in particular, make wide use of this research design to examine contemporary real-life situations and provide the basis for the application of concepts and theories and the extension of methodologies. The design can provide detailed descriptions of specific and rare cases.

What is the causal effect?

Causal effect (nomothetic perspective) occurs when variation in one phenomenon, an independent variable, leads to or results, on average, in variation in another phenomenon, the dependent variable.

What is cohort study?

Often used in the medical sciences, but also found in the applied social sciences, a cohort study generally refers to a study conducted over a period of time involving members of a population which the subject or representative member comes from, and who are united by some commonality or similarity.

What are the different types of research design?

There are numerous ways to classify research design. Based on the purpose and method, we could distinguish among 5 research design types: 1. Descriptive research design. This is a theory-based design, where the researcher is primarily interested in describing the topic that is the subject of the research.

What is the research design?

At the beginning of every meaningful research, a researcher chooses a framework of methods and techniques to be used and applied in the research process. This framework is usually referred to as the research design.

Why is research design important?

Research design also supports the specific type of research (experiment, survey, review, case study, correlation, and so on) that needs to be done.

What is a theory based design?

This is a theory-based design, where the researcher is primarily interested in describing the topic that is the subject of the research. It is applied to case studies, naturalistic observations, surveys, and so on.

What is correlational design?

Just as its name suggests, correlational design allows the researcher to establish some kind of a relation between two closely related topics or variables. It’s a non-experimental research design type that requires at least two groups of data.

What is a quasi-experiment?

Whether it is a field experiment, a controlled experiment, or a quasi-experiment, this is one of the research design types that establishes a relation between the cause and effect of a particular happening.

What is diagnostic research?

Diagnostic research design. Diagnostic research is one of the research design types that aims to examine the underlying cause of a certain situation or phenomenon. It can help you find out more about the factors that lead to specific issues or challenges your customers might be facing.

What is research design?

The essence of research design is to translate a research problem into data for analysis so as to provide relevant answers to research questions at a minimum cost . This paper investigates what research design is, the different kinds of research design and how a researcher can choose the appropriate research design for his/her study. The study reveals that research design choice is guided by a careful analysis of statement of the problem, research questions, conceptual /theoretical framework and analyzing the relevant literature.

Why is computer literacy important?

Computer literacy is essential for a workforce to compete favorably in this increasingly computerized environment . Most organizations and institutions require a workforce that is computer literate. This calls for schools to equip more students with computer skills. Schools should be adequately equipped to offer hands-on experience and nurture rapid learning, yet be intuitive and interesting to students. Setting up and maintaining a computer laboratory goes with a cost which most schools cannot keep pace with thus the need to embrace other effective computer architectures. The aim of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of thin-client computing over stand-alone computing for service delivery in computer laboratories. Survey research method based on quantitative research design was adopted for this research. Data collection was done using a questionnaire, interview and observation. A sample size of thirty percent of the secondary schools which offer computer studies in Bungoma County was used for data collection. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the schools to take part in the research. The research findings revealed that the main computer architectural configuration deployed by secondary schools for computer studies is stand-alone computer architecture. Thin-client computer architecture is more cost-effective compared to stand-alone computer architecture which if deployed in computer laboratories, schools will be able to offer computer studies to more students thus making more people computer literate.

What is research design?

A research design is a step-by-step approach used by a researcher to conduct a scientific study. It includes various methods and techniques to conduct research so that a research problem can be handled efficiently. A researcher has a series of questions that he needs to find answers by conducting research. Research method provides ...

Why should research design be able to ensure the standards results?

Research design should be able to ensure the standards results by indicating how research questions can be formed because a researcher will always want the same results every time, he performs an experiment.

Why is research method important?

Research method provides a logical sequence to conduct experiments so that all questions can be assessed in proper order. An impactful research design makes sure the least bias in the data collected and increases trust in analyzed research information.

What is the purpose of validity in research design?

The validity of a research design is used to calculate the expected results and to estimate the truthfulness of the result. In most cases, researchers opt for their own definition when it comes to what is considered valid. Therefore, the questionnaire prepared from the research design is considered valid.

What is generalization in research design?

Generalization is one of the most important key characteristics of research design. The results obtained from the research should be applicable to a population and not just to a limited sample.

What is case study research?

A case-study research design is used for the in-depth and detailed study of a subject. This technique is usually used to narrow down a big problem into small discrete easily researchable problems.

What is descriptive research?
