How does the Ford Coyote cooling system work?

The logic behind Coyote cooling system function is recirculation of coolant via the “Y” for faster warm-up and more generous coolant flow. The thermostat opens at 180 degrees F, allowing coolant flow from the radiator. (Illustration Courtesy Ford Performance Parts) The Coyote’s cooling system is simple in scope, as shown here.

What should I do if my coolant is too hot?

Coolant/antifreeze can be extremely hot, and will retain its heat for hours after the engine was last running. You’ll find it easier to get at the radiator drainage point (under the car) if you jack up the front two wheels. Clean the radiator with warm, soapy water, removing all dirt and grime (especially around the cap).

Where does coolant go in a car?

Coolant runs through a long manifold cast into the cylinder head at the exhaust valveseats. It then flows toward spark plugs, intake manifold, and block before heading back to the radiator.

Where does anti freeze coolant go?

Antifreeze typically goes into the coolant reservoir in your vehicle. Some older vehicles lack a coolant reservoir, in which case the antifreeze goes into the radiator. Whether you're looking for the coolant reservoir or radiator cap, you'll find this under the hood, though the exact placement varies by vehicle.

Do cooling system additives work?

A good coolant additive can help by reducing the surface tension of water and allowing it to more efficiently absorb and transfer heat from the engine.

How do you add SCA to coolant?

As a point of reference, a one pint bottle of DCA4 additive is equal to five units. A single unit of SCA raises a single gallon of coolant by one unit. So if you have a five gallon coolant system with an SCA reading of 1.2 and you wish to raise it to 2.2, you would add one pint of SCA to your system.

Do you put antifreeze in the radiator or overflow?

If there is no overflow tank or if the tank does not empty back into the cooling system, then pour this directly into the radiator, making sure not to go over the “full” line. Warning: Make sure to put the radiator cap back on after adding the new coolant and before starting the engine.

Can I just add coolant to my car without flushing?

There is no problem with just topping up the coolant. You can add the coolant without flushing out the old. However, with time, the older coolant becomes acidic. This can cause corrosion, and afterward, can cause defects in the cooling system.

Do you need coolant additive?

It's very important to use coolant designed for your vehicle's cooling system for the following reasons: The wrong additives will damage the metals and other materials within your car's cooling system. If you mix certain types of coolant together, sludge will form.

What is the best coolant additive to lower temperature?

Purple Ice is a high performance, synthetic, radiator coolant additive. It reduces engine heat by reducing the surface tension of the radiator fluids for improved heat transfer. Purple Ice fosters optimum coolant flow by helping to prevent formation of scale deposits in the radiator.

Which radiator flush is best?

Editor's Pick: Prestone Radiator Flush and Cleaner. ... Best Radiator Coolant Additive: Royal Purple Purple Ice Super Coolant. ... Best Flush for Diesel Engines: Liqui Moly Radiator Cleaner. ... Best for Oil-Based Cooling System: Irontite Thoroflush Radiator Flush. ... Best to Stop Leaks: Bar's Leaks 10-Minute Radiator Flush.

When should I put anti gel in diesel?

winterUse your diesel fuel anti-gel every time you fill up during the winter. Try to remember to add the anti-gel before pumping the fuel. This will help ensure a good mixture of the anti-gel throughout the fuel. This could be a sign that your fuel is gelling.

How do I check my coolant SCA?

Simply take a sample of the coolant and dip the 3-Way Test Strip. Within 45-75 seconds, read the Freeze Point and Molybdate/Nitrite levels to obtain SCA units. Record the readings and continue coolant maintenance practices according to OEM recommendations. One strip does it all!

Do diesels need special coolant?

It's not uncommon for diesel engines to require new coolant after as little as 30,000 miles. There are some longer life coolants on the market, but not all diesel engines can use them.

How does coolant flow into an engine?

When the thermostat opens, fresh coolant flows into the engine from the radiator via the lower radiator hose. Hot coolant exits the engine via the “Y”-pipe and upper radiator hose.

How does a coyote coolant system work?

In a conventional cooling system, coolant flows into the block from the radiator. The thermostat controls flow out of the engine. With the Coyote, coolant flow remains from the radiator through the bottom hose. However, the thermostat controls flow into the engine instead of out of it. This illustration shows the Coyote cooling system’s function ...

What is a hot spot on a coyote engine?

Coyote engines are known for hot spots, even after the initial coolant fill, which tends to yield fluctuating coolant temperatures until coolant occupies all cooling passages throughout the engine. Electric water pumps such as this eliminate power losses from enginedriven water pumps.

What is the Coyote cooling system?

Although the Coyote cooling system appears complex with its cluster of hoses and plumbing, it really is a simple system with clear priorities. The focus is the hottest segments of the engine and heat transfer to the radiator and atmosphere.

What is the water pump on a Coyote?

The Coyote’s high-flow water pump does a very efficient job of moving coolant through this engine. Instead of an old-fashioned gasket, the Coyote’s water pump uses an O-ring, which seals very well and will last for the life of the water pump.

Where is the heater hose connection?

When you add coolant, it flows from the tank to this inlet pipe. This is the heater hose connection at the right-hand-side (passenger) cylinder head (arrow). Coolant flows out of the engine via this pipe back to the heater core.

Where does coolant enter the engine?

Coolant enters the engine at the left-hand (driver) cylinder head at the thermostat and reaches exhaust valves on both heads first before flowing into the rest of the engine. Coolant exits the engine at the coolant neck on top and flows back to both the radiator and a return to the engine at the “Y”-pipe.

How long to run Prestone cooling system?

Pour Prestone Cooling System Flush into expansion tank and top up with water to the fill line. Then, run the engine for 45-60 minutes. Drain the system again, flush once more with water, before filling the system with Prestone Coolant/Antifreeze. This will ensure maximum protection for your car’s cooling system.

How to flush coolant from a car?

To flush with water and remove any leftover residue from the old coolant/antifreeze, top up the radiator with clean water using a hose, and replace the radiator cap. Then, start the engine and leave it running for 15 minutes. Wait for the engine to cool fully, then repeat the steps above to drain the water from the system.
