Therapy

Active adult patients involved in sports or jobs that require pivoting, turning or hard-cutting as well as heavy manual work are encouraged to consider surgical treatment. This includes older patients who have previously been excluded from consideration for ACL surgery.

Self-care

The surgeon inserts the new ACL into the femur and tibia using a flexible guide wire. Screws are used to secure the plugs of bone. Over time, these plugs will grow into the surrounding bone. The surgical instruments are removed to complete the procedure.

Nutrition

Consult an orthopedist or sports medicine physician as soon as possible. The doctor will determine how bad the ACL injury is and review whether nonsurgical treatment and rehabilitation will be enough or if orthopedic surgery is necessary.

Who do I go to for a torn ACL?

See your doctor as soon as you can because you may need an MRI or x-ray so your doctor can see exactly what type of injury that you have. You can treat an ACL injury with ice, rest, and pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. But you may also need physical therapy to get your knee moving normally again.

Do you go to hospital for torn ACL?

Pain varies from person to person, but a torn ACL is usually very painful and your child may have difficulty walking. Listen for a popping sound and watch for swelling in your child's knee 2-4 hours following the injury. If it begins to swell, go to the hospital or urgent care center for testing.

How much does it cost to fix torn ACL?

It will cost approximately $20,000 to $50,000 to pay for the surgeon fee, facility fee, anesthesia and graft. Additional costs include medical equipment such as knee braces and crutches which will add an extra $500. Physical therapy adds a cost of $1,000.

What do doctors do when you tear your ACL?

Surgery is not necessary for all patients. The main conservative treatments are rest and anti-inflammatory medication to reduce pain and inflammation.
