What is a gas cleaning system?
These systems are self-contained, automated units with integrated in situ cleaning technology for nonvolatile material deposits. Each process step can be programmed into the processing sequence. Cleaning is accomplished by switching the cleaning mode on and then switching it off when cleaning is completed. Real-time monitoring of chamber cleaning can be performed using sensing methods including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, quadrupole mass spectrometry, optical emission spectroscopy, nondispersive infrared (IR) absorption, and nonoptical plasma impedance analysis at the chamber effluent. Most of these systems also have integrated exhaust gas treatment units that may include capture, recovery, or abatement technologies. Examples of dry-etching systems are shown in Fig. 2.2.
How efficient are gas cleaning devices?
Gas cleaning devices vary in their removal efficiencies, but almost invariably they are more efficient at removing particulate, rather than aerosol size range material. Even so, the least efficient device for removing small particle sizes, the gravity settling chamber (Fig. 3.4), still plays an important role in emission control. When the gas stream to be cleaned has only large particles present which can be effectively removed by the device, then this device alone represents an inexpensive method of control. When the particle size range to be collected is wider than this, and a dry cyclone is to be used for final particle collection, very large particles (100–200 μm) should be removed prior to the gas stream entering the cyclone. Otherwise the interior of the cyclone is subjected to very high abrasion rates.
What is a settling chamber?
Settling chambers are the simplest form of industrial gas-cleaning equipment, but have only a limited use; they are suitable for coarse dusts, particles larger than 50 μ m. They are essentially long, horizontal, rectangular chambers; through which the gas flows. The solids settle under gravity and are removed from the bottom of the chamber. Horizontal plates or vertical baffles are used in some designs to improve the separation. Settling chambers offer little resistance to the gas flow, and can be designed for operation at high temperature and high pressure, and for use in corrosive atmospheres.
