How to remove burrs from a surfac?

keep the objective in mind - remove the burrs and don't disturbe the the table surface. 1) behave such as to minimize burrs, treat these surfacs with some care as the precision surfaces they are supposed to be. 2) you only want to remove the burrs, so give some thought to the stone you select.

Step 1: Design

The pieces I had, combined with a catalog diagram and a left-hand tap determined the basic design.

Step 2: Parts

All the parts were scraps I had already, I don't know how much it would cost to buy them. The base of the original is an 18mm thick and 15cm long t-shaped piece of seasoned gray cast iron. The stem of the t is 48mm wide, and the arms are 70mm across and are made into the mounting lugs.

Step 3: Base

I made the base first. I cold chiseled and filed the shape for the lugs, and, I think, I belt sanded and filed the bottom side and then milled the top including the keyway, as well as the slot with it clamped to the table. This way I could adjust it square when I flipped it over to machine the bottom.

Step 4: Nut

I think the factory made nuts are cast, it took some more chiselling and filing to make the shape so it could extend forward of the angled face. I cut the angle with a 60° dovetail cutter. I drilled the nut with it clamped to the base after first drilling a pilot in the base so the setup was the same.

Step 5: Jaws

I milled the moving jaw with a small endmill so it took a long time but probably I could have made the small radius corners by drilling them first, or even by making it in three pieces, with a channel and two ends.

Step 6: Screw

The clamping screw is threaded 3/8"-20 left hand. I used the tapped hole in the nut for a gauge since it's easier than measuring the pitch diameter with wires so it's probably oversize. I bored the housing but the outside is just sawed and filed to shape.

Step 7: Swivel Base

I made the swivel base at the same time as the vise, and it helped mounting the vise in different places but was not very good for its stated purpose because there wasn't any register between the vise and swivel plate except the clamping screws, which aren't fitted to the lugs on the vise, and I didn't want to weaken the vise by milling a key slot in the bottom.

Squaring up milling vise

How do you square up the jaws of your milling vise with the table on a milling machine quickly without trial and error? Thanks.

Re: Squaring up milling vise

If you want to square the vise up, theres only one way that I know of. tighten down one side of the vise (really tighten, not snug), for me, it's the left side, lol.. snug the opposite side.

Re: Squaring up milling vise

Look on the bottom of your vise for the recesses for the key like Jacin mentioned. Most vises have them. If your vise has the recess, then take a piece of square stock and make and fit the keys to your vise. Should also have drilled and tapped holes for setscrews to hold the key.

Re: Squaring up milling vise

Great advice!...but assuming the vise swivel's on it's center, I usually initially zero out the indicator in the middle (eyeballed) of the vise jaw's. Speed's thing's up a wee bit if it's substantially off.

Speed alignment

If you are not going for super precision, I have a really quick way to line the vise up. As has been said, leave one side loose, but only slightly tighten the other so the vise is fairly easy to move, but definitely has some "stiction". Chuck up a piece of drill rod, lathe stub, a broken end mill shank, anything about 3/8" or larger...

Re: Squaring up milling vise

for a quick fix, i use a piece of ground stock approx. 1/2",2'', by 24''... i clamp it in the vise jaws, (flat side down), then "eyeball" the parallism of the clamped stock to the top "backside" of the milling table.... on my little atlas horizontal/vertical mill, i can get to +,- .001 very quickly....

Re: Squaring up milling vise

Here is a method I use that will align the vise quickly (I do not have keys on the bottom of the vise). Similar to Bull's description I snug up one side of the vise and leave the other a little looser, you will get a feel for this the more you do it. Touch the indicator on the side close to the tighter side - reading doesn't really matter.
