The desired “end-point” of treatment is scaling, crust and redness at the treated site without a bump being present to indicate the lesion is still present. You can apply the Efudex with a Q-tip (if spot treating), gloves or fingers.

One of the key characteristics of erosion and what I watch for most is weepy skin. I have to say it is the most unsightly part of treatment, but I am always glad to see it; it means I am heading into recovery. Generally speaking, around the third or fourth week (patient instructions vary by case and doctor), seeping can occur.

One day at a time

I know. I know. None of that sounds hopeful or positive. Your dermatologist thinks you can handle it, and so do I. Three to four weeks sounds like an eternity, but it passes more quickly when you know what to watch for. Keep in mind, only your doctor can tell you when enough is enough.

After Efudex: Days 1-7

Day 1 (June 24) No visible reaction. Sensation that something is different. No pain. Day 2 (June 25) Same as Day 1. Headache. Stomach slightly upset. Fatigued late in the day. Day 3 (June 26) A little redness around spot on lower left cheek. No pain. No itching. Stomach upset.

What is Efudex used for?

Efudex (for the skin) is used to treat scaly overgrowths of skin (actinic or solar keratosis ). Efudex is also used to treat superficial basal cell carcinoma. Efudex may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

How to get rid of fluorouracil in eyes?

Rinse with water or saline if this medicine gets in your eyes. Do not let Efudex build up in the skin folds around your mouth, nose, or eyes. Use caution when applying the medicine around these areas. Avoid using other medications on the areas you treat with fluorouracil unless your doctor tells you to.

Do not use Efudex if you are pregnant. It could harm the unborn baby or cause birth defects.

Can you use Efudex on skin?

Apply only enough medicine to cover the affected skin with a thin film. Do not apply Efudex to skin that is irritated, peeling , or infected or on open wounds. Wait until these conditions have fully healed before using this medicine.

How to treat efudex?

These are two types of topical creams that doctors usually prescribe on the first and second days of healing after your Efudex treatment has been stopped 1. Mix and apply the two creams on the affected area two to three times daily, but preferably once after waking up and another one in the evening . During this time, expect your skin to crack and bleed and sting, and expect your eyes to swell.

How long does it take for Efudex to heal?

After the period of treatment, which usually lasts two to four weeks, you need another one to two months of healing.

How to treat a stinging scab?

Use an analgesic such as Tylenol to reduce the pain from the fourth to sixth days of healing. Expect a more stinging pain, a bloody broken skin and severe itchiness on the affected part. Apply sunscreen to protect the healing skin when you go out.
