Adhesion of EAB on the electrode accepts the electrons and transfers the electrons for the reduction of pollutants [39,40]. The electrode materials used for wastewater treatment are noncatalyzed in an economical point of view. Graphite electrodes were used for the treatment of dairy wastewater with an SDR 1.059 kg of COD/m 3 per day [13]. Carbon cloth, carbon paper, or carbon felt was considered effective due to its high electrical conductivity and chemical stability [41–44]. Carbon-based multiwalled nanotubes (MWCNTs), plain graphite anode (MFCP), and carbon nanopowder (CNP) impregnated using conductive epoxy resin on the anodic surface were evaluated for the treatment of distillery wastewater. The study reported that maximum COD removal was registered with MWCNT 64.38% with an SDR of 0.59 kg of CODR/m 3 per day followed by CNP (61.91%, 0.57 kg of CODR/m 3 per day) and plain graphite (61.64%, 0.56 kg of COD/m 3 per day). Nanostructures-impregnated anodes have increased surface area in comparison to graphite electrodes using multiwalled carbon nanotubes and CNP. As the surface impregnation increases the surface area, effective electron transfer was observed resulting in the treatment of distillery wastewater [14].

How does biofilm affect electrochemical properties?

The electrode material on which the biofilm formed affects the electrochemical characteristics such as current and voltage measurements and open circuit voltage (OCV) measure ment. For the supporting electrode in a BES, which completes the electrochemical cell and functions as the electron source/sink for the electrons derived from the EAB, a cheaper carbon electrode with a larger surface area can be used. Conventionally, cheaply available electrode materials viz., graphite, carbon paper, carbon granule, carbon brush, or carbon felt are used in BESs [54,88]. Surface modification of the electrodes has emerged as an important approach to enhance biofilm formation in BESs. Surface modification methods may include several physicochemical treatments. Plasma treatments applied for metallic surfaces, organosilane coating for enhanced biofilm adsorption, chemical modifications of carbon nanotubes for microbial adsorption as well as excellent electrical conductivity, nitric acid treatment, and covalent-immobilization with neutral red molecules for enhancing electrical conductivity are studied [89]. These modifications entail permanently altering the properties of surfaces by chemical or physical means and consequently changing its interaction with the environment and affecting microbial attachment [90].

Progressive increase in the field of material science and the application of various materials such as polymers, carbons, oxides, metals, nanomaterials other than gold and platinum are accepted as efficient materials in enzymatic electrosynthesis. In enzymatic electrosynthesis, variety of polymeric materials like chitosan, polyphenols, polyaniline, polyvinyl pyridine, and polyvinyl alcohol have been studied extensively [58,59]. Such biocompatible polymers are broadly accepted due to its efficient transfer of electrons, which help the electrocatalytic reaction of the enzyme. Similarly, redox polymers with the use of efficient mediators have been studied for effective electron mediation at anodes as well as cathodes [60]. Electrodes modified with polymer brush studied for efficient activity of enzymatic electrosynthesis and its application are dependent on the pH of the solution [61]. The polymeric materials with additional functional groups acting as receptors such as polymer matrix, mediators, or ions are employed to increase the efficiency of electrodes [62]. Carbon-based electrodes are unique materials due to its properties such as large surface area, high electrical conductivity, high electron delocalization, and high chemical and thermal stability [52]. Carbon black, carbon pastes, graphite, carbon fibers, glassy carbon, etc. have been widely studied because of high surface area, which helps the activity of enzymatic electrosynthesis. Carbon nanofibres showed high conductivity which facilitates diffusion of free electrons and acts as potential electrode supports in e-BES for effective enzyme immobilization [63,64]. Similarly, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are studied widely as electrode materials due to their conductivity and have potential in MET reactions. It incorporates GOx and NiFe-hydrogenase acting as conducting wires, which showed improved efficiency of electrodes [65]. CNTs utilization with metals (Pt/Au) and polymers are widely applied and most commonly studied as unique materials in EES [66]. Table 5.11.2 shows the summary for the relevant DET and MET system studies on enzymatic cells with respect to specific enzyme/or enzymes used.
