Are rabies shots in your stomach?
No, the rabies vaccine has not been given in the stomach since the 1980s. For adults, it should only be given in the deltoid muscle of the upper arm (administration to the gluteal area is NOT recommended, as studies have shown this can result in a less effective immune response).
Does a rabies shot go under the skin or in the muscle?
Injecting into the muscle can be painful for some time, while under the skin the pain is usually of a shorter duration. It's wrong and unnecessary to move the needle around to distribute the vaccine in the muscle tissue. This only causes more trauma and could inadvertently hit a nerve and cause nerve damage.Jun 9, 2001
Can rabies vaccine be given in buttocks?
The gluteal area should never be used for rabies vaccine injections because observations suggest administration in this area results in lower neutralizing antibody titers.
Where is rabies vaccine injected?
The vaccine is injected into the upper arm muscle (deltoid). Very young or small children may have the vaccine injected into the upper leg (thigh) muscle.Feb 1, 2022
