The only drug that has FDA approval for treatment of Cryptosporidium is nitazoxanide . Nitazoxanide was synthesized in the 1980s by combining a thiazole ring (similar structurally to metronidazole) with a benzamidine ring (similar to the tapeworm drug niclosamide).
