Treatment FAQ

what is teh mammut dry treatment

by Mr. Jett McLaughlin V Published 3 years ago Updated 2 years ago

Dry Treatment. Dry treatment is when a climbing rope is coated with a sealant that improves the durability and resistance to water, dirt and grime. Only the Mammut Infinity has been dry treated. The dry treatment process used meets the UIAA standard for water repellency, absorbing just 1% of its weight in water even after surface abrasion, making the rope a lot more durable.

It comes with dual dry treatment inherent, meaning that both the sheath and the core are treated for an absorption rate of less than 1.5% according to UIAA tests. It is possible to buy this rope in "Protect" and "Classic" versions, without the dual dry treatment, for less money.Sep 19, 2019

Is the Mammut Infinity protect a good buy?

The verdict: the Mammut Infinity is a fantastic buy. To see how it stacks up to the competition, check out our article on the best climbing ropes. One of the things I love most about the Mammut Infinity Protect is the way it feels in hand when clipping.

Is the dry treatment supposed to work in wet conditions?

I haven’t had much of a chance to test the dry treatment in wet circumstances, as I’ve just been lucky with the weather. But what I have noticed is that when packing up in a sprinkle, you can see the water beading up on the surface of the rope and sliding off. This, of course, is precisely what a dry treatment is supposed to do.

What is the difference between the Mammut ‘classic’ and ‘protect’ ropes?

Because the dry-treatments are expensive, Mammut also chose to offer a ‘Classic’ line of ropes without any treatment, as well as a mid-level ‘Protect’ finish, in which only the sheath is treated (both the core and the sheath are treated in the ‘Dry’ ropes).

What does dry treated rope mean?

They can make a difference in performance and ease of use. Dry Treatment: When a rope absorbs water, it gets heavier and is less able to withstand forces generated in a fall (the rope will regain all of its strength when dry). When it's cold enough for absorbed water to freeze, a rope gets stiff and unmanageable.

What is the difference between a dry and non-dry climbing rope?

The Dry climbing rope is manufactured to repel water entry on the surface and is equipped with a water repellent coating. Obviously, non-dry climbing ropes do not come with a water repellent coating and do not prevent water from coming inside the rope.

How do you wash a dry treated rope?

To wash it, proceed like with a climbing rope, wash by hand or in a washing machine with cold water and a gentle cycle. Special rope soap should be used on the rope and let it dry completely before storing it away!

What is Alpine rope?

9.5 Alpine Dry Rope, the classic Mammut single rope for alpine climbing. The rope is based on Mammut's best-selling Infinity, known for its perfect balance of diameter, weight and handling. These are also the hallmarks of the 9.5 Alpine Dry Rope: low weight, high performance and Dry finishing. A versatile single rope.

Can a non dry rope get wet?

Both dry rope and non-dry rope can get wet, but it's not ideal for them to get wet when you're out climbing. Climbing ropes should only be used when they are dry unless you're in an emergency situation and have no other choice.

How do I know if my rope is static or dynamic?

When you are rock-climbing, you want to be using dynamic ropes: the design of dynamic ropes have more elongation, which means it will stretch when loaded. I.e. catch your fall more softly. Static rope, will not stretch as it does not have much elongation.

How do you clean a Mammut climbing rope?

Note: You can wash your rope by hand in the bathtub or sink, however machine washing a quality rope is easier and perfectly fine.

How important is dry treatment climbing rope?

The dry treatment is added to help keep your rope from absorbing water. In addition, dry treatments also have a positive effect on increasing life span on dry rock, as it can ensure sure other crud (sand, dirt, etc) can't penetrate the rope either.

Can you wash a non dry treated rope?

It is okay to use the hot water setting on your clothes washer as it likely won't damage the rope. During the manufacturing process, the rope is exposed to high temperature steam. Damage to nylon does not occur until it has been exposed to over 300˚ water for over 5 hours.

Why do people climb with 2 ropes?

Climbing with half ropes rather than twin ropes has the benefits of reduced rope drag and better distribution of forces across more pieces of gear during a fall.

Why do ice climbers use two ropes?

Twin ropes are designed to be used in pairs with both strands being clipped together in every protection point. The twin rope system also facilitates longer rappels and provides redundancy in case one of the strands is cut or damaged by a falling object or sharp edge.

How many quickdraws do I need?

Most sport routes can be led with 12 quickdraws, so this is a good start. Longer sport routes (more than 30m long) require 16 to 18 quickdraws. Exceptionally long routes require 24 or more quickdraws.

Our Verdict

The Mammut Revelation Dry is a skinny 9.2mm diameter rope that actually feels even skinnier than its listed thickness. Like all Mammut ropes, it is tightly woven, slick and smooth handling, and a pleasure to use.

Performance Comparison

We like using skinny 9.2mm ropes on alpine climbing and multi-pitch missions. Ben Hoyt coiling the rope over his harness as he prepares to belay up the second on a finger crack variation to the Beckey-Chouinard in the Bugaboos.

Value

A 60m length of this rope will run you $260 retail, while you can expect to pay $300 for a 70m.

Conclusion

The Mammut Revelation Dry is a thinner dry treated line that is best used for alpine climbing and long multi-pitch routes.

Performance

One of the things I love most about the Mammut Infinity Protect is the way it feels in hand when clipping. A friend commented that she felt the rope was a bit stiffer than others she had used, and I agree with that sentiment.

What We Don't

At this point, I haven’t come up against any real gripes with the Infinity. The only thing I could think of would be cost—you can find other ropes of this length and diameter for cheaper. That said, the Infinity is a cut above some similar less expensive lines I’ve had.

The Competition

It would be foolhardy to compare any two ropes of different diameters, so let’s stick to 9.5s here. Two other 9.5mm ropes I have experience with are the Edelweiss Energy Arc, and the Maxim Pinnacle. These are great ropes to compare the Infinity to, because they rest, respectively, on par with the Mammut and on the high-end side of the spectrum.

What is Mammut's new rope called?

Hidden in this naming change is a brand new rope called the 9.0 Alpine Sender Dry.

What are the different categories of Mammut climbing ropes?

Mammut has created three different categories for their dynamic climbing ropes: Gym, Crag and Alpine. Each of these categories was then populated with the ropes appropriate for that specific activity, and have been renamed by category and rope diameter.

Is Mammut rope slippery?

The rope is great to belay with, not overly slippery but still easy to manage through a belay device. Of course some of that is due to the diameter but definitely not all of it. I have not tested the rope with big falls to see how it stands up to that type of punishment, but in general Mammut ropes do well.

Humidifier

Using a humidifier once or twice a day, especially in your sleeping area at night, can help a lot. Cool or warm mist both work; use what you prefer. There are different kinds of humidifiers, including small, personal models, some with face masks and others that just direct steam in the air near you.

A Water Spray Bottle

Keep a spray bottle with water nearby and spray inside your mouth when needed to keep it wet. Adding a few drops of aloe or glycerin to the water can make it last longer or extend the moisturizing effects.

Sugarless Candy, Lozenges or Gum

Having something in the mouth can trigger natural saliva production. Citrus, cinnamon and mint are good flavor choices if they are not too acidic or irritating. Look for those with aloe, xylitol, glycerin or other hydrating agents and sugarless gum with baking soda, available at many local drugstores.

More Moisture at Mealtime

Sip water between bites when eating. Adding condiments, soups, gravies and sauces can help, too.

Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol

Caffeine and alcohol can cause excessive dryness since they are diuretics.

Alcohol-free Mouthwashes

Alcohol can further dry out your mouth. Most kids’ mouthwashes are alcohol-free, and many brands have an alcohol-free option.

Saliva Substitutes

Ask your pharmacist about over-the-counter products that can come in drops or spray formulas.

What is Mammut Infinity Dry?

The Mammut Infinity Dry is a 9.5mm rope that feels a bit thinner than most other ropes of this diameter. Mammut ropes tend to all feel this way, in large part due to the very tightly woven sheath that seems to effectively compress the core into a tighter package than other brands of rope. This tightness is easily noticeable in the weave of the sheath, which contributes to its durability and lack of fraying over time, but also in the handle of the rope, which could also be described as tight. It comes with dual dry treatment inherent, meaning that both the sheath and the core are treated for an absorption rate of less than 1.5% according to UIAA tests. It is possible to buy this rope in "Protect" and "Classic" versions, without the dual dry treatment, for less money. We tested a single patterned weave, but duodess weaves are also available, and the lengths one can buy ranges from 60, 70, and 80m.

Does dry sheath treatment last?

The dry treatment certainly aids in the durability of the sheath itself but also doesn't seem to last as long as some other dry treatments. You will quickly wear the treatment off the sheath by cragging, and then can't expect it to stay totally dry in the mountains.
