DOM is a highly heterogeneous mixture and plays a significant role in ecosystem processes. It is the primary removal substance and limiting factor of wastewater reclamation and reuse application ( Phungsai et al., 2016 ). It was reported that the dissolved organic matter accounts for 78.1%–86.5% of total COD and 82.6–86.6% of total organic carbon in the effluent of WWTPs ( Wang et al., 2014 ). DOM from the secondary effluent contained considerable biomass-associated products including SMP, which were concerned as refractory fractions with high MW ( Cui et al., 2016) and central constitution of effluent COD in many biological treatment plants ( Zhen et al., 2013 ). Therefore, various treatment technologies for removing DOM from wastewater had been investigated by researchers, and previous reviews mainly focused on the removal effectiveness of DOM by advanced treatment methods, such as membrane separation, ion-exchange resin, adsorption, etc. ( Michael-Kordatou et al., 2015, Vigneswaran, 2006, Yang et al., 2015 ).

DOM is a complex heterogeneous mixture of organic compounds with various functional groups, such as carboxylic, carbonyl, methoxyl, hydroxyl, and phenolic functional groups ( Chen et al., 2003, Leenheer and Croué, 2003, Li et al., 2013, Shi et al., 2016, Yu et al., 2014 ). Among the characteristics of DOM, MW distribution and hydrophobicity are the fundamental physicochemical properties and essential representatives ( Li et al., 2013, Shi et al., 2016, Xiao et al., 2016 ). The conventional methods, such as size exclusion chromatography/gel filtration chromatography and ultrafiltration, were utilized for MW distribution analysis. To better understand the behavior of DOM during wastewater treatment, high-performance liquid chromatography/high-performance size exclusion combined with fluorescence detector were applied to analyze MW distribution and polarity ( Li et al., 2013 ). DOM with different fractions shows various MW distribution and hydrophobicity, which can result in the differences in optical signals ( Chen et al., 2003, Cuss and Gueguen, 2012 ). Therefore, it might be feasible to use optical technologies (such as EEM) to determine MW distribution and hydrophobicity ( Xiao et al., 2016 ). In addition, as shown in Fig. 1, the possible correlation between MW distribution/hydrophobicity and composition of DOM can be obtained by the analysis of optical charactersitics (EEM, UV–Vis and FTIR).
