What is DWR?

Apr 13, 2021 · DWR coatings are chemical treatments applied to the face fabric of garments, tents, and sleeping bags to make them hydrophobic (water resistant). In a few words, the treatments make water bead up on the surface of the fabric by increasing the angle of contact between the fabric and the moisture.

What are the benefits of DWR treatment?

Nov 22, 2021 · DWR stands for “durable water repellent,” a thin layer of liquid applied to the outside of technical garments to repel oil, grease, dirt, and water. Unfortunately, a DWR treatment is not a permanent property of most outerwear and periodic care is necessary to maintain peak performance.

What is DWR (Durable water repellency)?

What is DWR? Virtually all rainwear is treated with a DWR, or a durable water repellent finish. While a waterproof/breathable membrane will stop water from penetrating to a rain jacket’s interior, a DWR is also needed to prevent precipitation from saturating the jacket’s exterior.

What are the different types of DWR products?

Jan 07, 2019 · What is a DWR Treatment? Posted: 1/7/2019. By: Collin Barnwell. What is DWR? Necessary for manufacturers who produce products suitable for outdoor use, DWR is an acronym for Durable Water Repellent and is added to component materials to make them hydrophobic - meaning they repel water. Fulfilling the needs of manufacturers, DWR treatments are applied …

How long does DWR treatment last?

Like all good things, the waterproof nature of Gore-tex fabric will weaken over time and diminish in performance. At this time it will require some maintenance to restore its waterproof nature. Reproofing your jacket is quick and easy and recommended to be done every 3-6 months, or after a particularly heavy use*.Oct 24, 2018

Is DWR harmful?

The DWR we used as a standard for years was a long-chain (C8) fluorocarbon-based treatment that is highly effective and extraordinarily durable. Unfortunately, its by-products are toxic and persist in the environment, a combination that makes it unacceptable despite its excellent performance.

Does DWR coating wear off?

The simple answer is no. DWR is a surface treatment and does not impact the performance of the waterproof membrane. Both properties are separate, meaning when the DWR wears off, a waterproof jacket is still waterproof. Waterproof ratings are determined without considering DWR.Jan 4, 2017

What is the purpose of DWR coating?

What is DWR? Virtually all rainwear is treated with a DWR, or a durable water repellent finish. While a waterproof/breathable membrane will stop water from penetrating to a rain jacket's interior, a DWR is also needed to prevent precipitation from saturating the jacket's exterior.

How many washes does DWR last?

10-20 washesAfter every 10-20 washes, reapplying the coating with a spray-on treatment such as Revivex or Nikwax TX Direct Spray-On (see video below) or wash-in treatment such as Nikwax TX Direct Wash-In will restore the coating's effectiveness to levels similar to those at the time of purchase.May 13, 2018

Is DWR breathable?

On outerwear and accessories with waterproof/breathable membranes like Gore-Tex, DWR prevents them from becoming saturated—a condition known as “wet out”—which can leave users feeling damp and clammy, as well as inhibit breathability.Aug 18, 2021

What chemicals are in DWR?

Nearly all DWR (durable water repellent) gear uses a type of chemical known as perfluorocarbons, or PFCs, to disperse moisture from the surface. PFCs are the same chemicals found in nonstick cookware.Sep 3, 2016

What storm repels DWR?

The StormRepel® finish on your Eddie Bauer garment causes moisture to bead on the surface and roll off rather than soak into the fabric. We use four different levels of StormRepel in our outerwear, with StormRepel Super DWR our most durable level of repellency, and WR being the most basic.

Is C6 DWR safe?

C8 and C6 water repellents contain dangerous fluorocarbons which are made of carbon and fluorine atoms. Although these chemicals help repel water and oil from fabrics, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined them to be highly toxic to humans.

Is DWR coating good?

The DWR we used as a standard for years was a long-chain (C8) fluorocarbon-based treatment that is highly effective and extraordinarily durable. Unfortunately, its by-products are toxic and persist in the environment, a combination that makes it unacceptable despite its excellent performance.

How do you wash clothes with DWR?

Regular WashingWash the garment with an additive-free detergent like Nikwax Tech Wash (not liquid detergents or anything that contains fabric softeners as these can impact the effectiveness of the DWR finish). Before washing, read the care label inside the jacket and follow any specific instructions provided.More items...•Jul 27, 2018

How is DWR applied?

DWR is most commonly applied to the fabric at the factory level using two methods: spray-on, and wash-in. This means that companies either have the DWR professionally sprayed on or washed into the fabric. Both methods can be done during the construction and production of the fabric and jacket, or at home.

How does DWR work?

DWR works by increasing the “contact angle” or “surface tension” created when water touches a textile. Basically, a high angle of contact creates a microscopically “spiky” surface that suspends water droplets on the outer fringe of the fabric. An optimized DWR keeps droplets in a rounder shape—like a dome-shaped bead.

Why do rain jackets need DWR?

While a waterproof/breathable membrane will stop water from penetrating to a rain jacket’s interior, a DWR is also needed to prevent precipitation from saturating the jacket’s exterior. When the DWR breaks down, the rain jacket’s exterior becomes waterlogged and heavy.

Does DWR coating affect waterproofing?

It’s time to revive your DWR. Good news: Adding a DWR coating does not impair the performance of your jacket’s waterproof/breathable membrane.

Can you spray DWR on rain jackets?

This step eventually becomes necessary because DWR can be abraded off of high-contact areas like the cuffs and collar, or by the jacket rubbing against natural surfaces like rocks or brush. Your DWR can be reapplied via a spray-on or wash-in product that essentially coats all of the DWR “bald spots” on your rainwear.

What is a DWR finish?

A DWR finish is nothing more than a chemical combination of carbon and fluorine, known as fluorocarbons (PFCs). While this finish can be applied in a number of methods, there are two 'industry standard' options for DWR treatments:

Is DWR treated fabric waterproof?

Fabrics with a DWR treatment are not waterproof.

What DWR Does

A DWR coating causes water to bead up and roll off of it, which keeps weather like rain and snow from saturating the exterior of outwear like jackets.

How DWR Works

DWR works by making the fibers on the outside of a garment hydrophobic, or, in other words, water repellent. DWR does this by microscopically creating a “spiky” surface—think of the bristles of a brush—which increases surface tension when water comes in contact with it and causes water droplets to band together at the outer edge of the fabric.

Caring for DWR

DWR coatings are not intended to last forever—dirt, oils, sunscreen, and a host of other factors clog and flatten out the “spiky” fibers and hamper their ability to fend off water. Consequently, you need to maintain the DWR treatment on your gear.

Reapplying DWR

If your jacket is still wetting out after washing, all is not lost—DWR is easily reapplied. Nikwax offers a host of wash-in and spray-on products that will breathe new life into your DWR and help keep you dry, comfortable, and smiling.

What is DWR in clothing?

What is DWR? DWR stands for “durable water repellent,” a thin layer of liquid applied to the outside of technical garments to repel oil, grease, dirt, and water. Garments treated with a DWR treatment will not get saturated with water as easily as garments without, and will be less prone to “wet out,” ...

How long does DWR last?

How long a DWR treatment lasts depends mainly on garment use. If you use your garment several times each week for intense periods of activity, the DWR will not last as long as a jacket that is used, say, only a few times per month. And DWR applied at the factory to a new garment typically lasts longer than reapplications.

How to restore water repellent?

To restore the water repellency of GORE-TEX outerwear, GORE-TEX brand recommends the following steps: Machine wash your garment as described in the wash instructions. Line dry your garment or tumble dry it on a warm, gentle cycle . Once it is dry, tumble dry your garment for 20 minutes to reactivate the durable water-repellent (DWR) ...

How does DWR help a jacket?

A well-maintained DWR treatment will, however, help your jacket breathe very efficiently by minimizing saturated outer fabric and maximize your comfort. No matter your product, the story is relatively the same. It’s important to monitor and maintain your jacket for optimal performance.

How to test DWR on a jacket?

To test your jacket’s DWR, sprinkle on some water. If the water beads up, your DWR is in good shape . If the water soaks in and obvious darker areas appear, it is time to restore your DWR. Be sure to test your jacket all over, as soaking can occur from any breach.

What are the three main groups of DWR?

A wide variety of DWR products are available and, as of 2016, new DWR formulas are entering the market. The three main groups are fluorocarbon-based, silicone-based, and hydrocarbon-based polymers . It’s worth noting that each type has its strengths and weaknesses, such as repelling oils and dirt very well, but water not as well or vice versa.

Can you wear rainwear with DWR?

Rainwear with highly effective DWR is highly desirable in the outdoor world. Instead of soaking to the core, hikers, backpackers, and campers who wear rainwear with DWR can roll or shake off water and remain dry inside and out. Unfortunately, a DWR treatment is not a permanent property of most outerwear and periodic care is necessary ...

Is C6 DWR a PFC?

After the ban, responsible outdoor gear companies transitioned to a different PFC that has a shorter carbon chain, a 6 carbon molecule termed C6. Today, almost all of your X-Pac fabrics use this C6 DWR. While it is still a PFC, this C6 alternative breaks down faster and is not as persistent in our environment. Is C6 safer compared to C8? Definitely, but that doesn’t mean its safe in general. The switch to a shorter-chain PFC is a step in the right direction, but its not our safest option.

Is Dyneema 40 waterproof?

Yes, the most notable one being Dyneema 40. Our Dy neema 40 fabric is not only one of the most durable fabrics used in the outdoor industry but it’s also completely free of any DWR. This is because of the inherent nature of dyneema. The unique and simple chemical make up of Dyneema repels water so well no DWR is needed.
