NSPT is proud to announce the development of a research department. The Neuropsychology Department has formed a working relationship with several clinical psychology graduate programs in the area. NSPT neuropsychologists and the post-doctoral fellow will help lead various research projects with masters and doctoral level graduate students.

THE SEVEN-STEP PROTOCOL

Step 1. Controlling Systemic Risk Factors. Several risk factors have well established associations with both periodontal and systemic diseases, such as diabetes, smoking, stress, immunodeficiency, medications, obesity, hormones, and nutrition. For optimal treatment results, systemic risk factors must be modified or eliminated.

CONCLUSION

Reevaluation of treatment response, determination of a patient-specific periodontal maintenance interval, and gaining patient compliance are necessary to maintain periodontal health. Even with optimal care, however, up to 10% of patients may not exhibit the expected res­ponse to nonsurgical therapy, and may thus require more aggressive treatment.
