Because rTMS uses magnetic pulses, before beginning a treatment, patients are asked to remove any magnetic-sensitive objects (such as jewelry, credit cards).

What are the risks of using rTMS?

The most serious risk of rTMS is seizures. However, the risk of a seizure is exceedingly low. At Johns Hopkins, we follow up-to-date safety guidelines that are designed to minimize the risk of seizures.

Can you do too much TMS?

You may be wondering whether prolonged exposure to TMS treatment will cause any negative effects down the road. The FDA has approved TMS treatments for depression and OCD, and clinical studies have been conducted to research long-term TMS risks. No adverse effects have been associated with long-term TMS therapy.

What Happens With an rTMS Procedure?

A patient sits in a treatment chair. Patients are asked to remove any magnetic-sensitive objects (such as jewelry) since rTMS uses magnetic pulses that can heat magnetic metals. Patients wear earplugs during treatment for hearing protection, as rTMS produces a loud clicking sound with each pulse.
