Is a post treatment stage necessary for VFCW?

A post-treatment stage is usually not necessary in a full-scale VFCW facility, since the combined system of pretreatment and VFCW stages is capable of providing an effluent of high quality. However, a post-treatment stage may be present, especially when criteria for effluent reuse are to be met. Common disinfection techniques like chlorination, UV radiation, or subsurface chlorination may be used to ensure that the effluent meets specific criteria for reuse concerning the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms (Gross et al., 2007 ). Maturation ponds have also been used in certain systems for disinfection ( Gikas et al., 2011 ).

Why is pretreatment required?

Pre-treatment is mandatory because membrane systems are susceptible to fouling. The extent of physical and chemical pre-treatment depends on the quality of raw water, e.g. well water typically require minimum pre-treatment, whereas wastewaters require extensive pre-treatment.

Can radionuclides be used to poison water?

Natural radionuclides can be used for radioactive contamination of drinking water. Such an attack can occur on a public water supply system, both in its entirety and/or as a part of the distribution system. In the case of large water systems, for example, a major city with a drinking water reservoir, it is difficult to conceive of introducing sufficient radioactive material to render the water system a potential source of acute radiation poisoning. However, it is much more plausible to contaminate the water supply to a level considered unsafe for chronic consumption.

What is integrated wastewater treatment?

The integrated approach plays a great role in complete treatment of antibiotics and AMR/ARG containing wastewater. The combination of various biological technologies with pre- or post-treatment has special significance to improve water quality. Generally, the main objective of wastewater treatment is to manage biodegradable organic waste, commonly pursued by biological methods such as activated sludge process and integrated with physicochemical process either as primary treatment or tertiary treatment. Physicochemical treatments are not only applied as a prebiological step but sometimes also as a posttreatment process either alone or in combination, especially for pharmaceutical wastewater. Presently, the integrated pharmaceutical wastewater treatment employs the following methods: coagulation and sedimentation, adsorption, flotation, AOPs, photocatalysis, electrolysis, and so on (Li and Li, 2015 ).

What is MWI bottom ash?

MWI-bottom ash is the solid residue from combustion of municipal waste or in a Municipal Waste Incineration Furnace. Often MWI-bottom ashes have been subjected to a post treatment consisting of magnetic separation of iron and sieving and comminution of particles > 40 mm. Fly ashes from Municipal Waste Incineration are kept separate from the MWI-bottom ash. In the Dutch situation it is forbidden to prepare mixed ashes from fly ash and bottom ashes. In 1996 800,000 tons of MWI-bottom ash were produced in the Netherlands. The last years MWI-bottom ash is utilized for 100%, primarily in granular form as embankment material up to a hight of 10 m or more or as a road base material.
