Casual, modest clothing free of potentially triggering logos or images. If in doubt about this, please check with the admissions coordinator before your arrival. Note: Clothing can have no more than 5% spandex or elastane (This does not include underwear, which may be over 5% spandex).

Accommodations and Items to Bring
Five changes of everyday clothes: socks, underwear, pullover shirts, pants, sleepwear, and comfortable shoes are recommended. Please do not bring any clothes or shoes with belts, ribbons, strings, drawstrings, or shoestrings.

Can I have my phone at Sheppard Pratt?

All visitors must display ID upon entering the unit. When visiting, you may not bring a cell phone or camera onto the unit; please be sure to leave these in a secure off-unit location when visiting. If you are bringing in any items for your loved one, all bags will be searched before they are given to the patient.

Who owns Sheppard Pratt?

The average length of stay on our unit is five to seven days; some individuals need less time to stabilize and return home, and some may need more time.

Types of Treatment

We utilize a dialectical behavior therapy-informed approach (DBT) in a lot of our programming. We have found that DBT can be therapeutic and effective for everyone we serve.

What Patients Can Expect

Our 22-bed, locked-door coed unit provides each patient with an individual bedroom. This arrangement assures privacy and promotes a therapeutic environment. We offer shared bathrooms.

Receiving Mail

Patients are welcome to receive mail during a stay at The Trauma Disorders Program. However, patients cannot receive packages of items once admitted to the unit.

Parking

Free parking is available for visitors at most Sheppard Pratt locations. Please follow the posted signage in regards to parking.

The Sheppard Pratt cafeteria on the Towson campus is open for visitors every day. Vending machines, offering snacks and beverages, are located in the cafeteria, and are available 24 hours a day.

Visiting a Loved One in Treatment

At Sheppard Pratt hospitals, each of our inpatient units has designated visiting hours. Our patients work with their clinical care team to determine the nature and frequency of the visits they would like to receive.

How long does the admissions process take?

We strive to make the admissions process as quick and streamlined as possible. We work with many different organizations, such as other hospitals and referring clinicians, throughout the admissions process, and also need to ensure that we have a bed available that meets your or your loved one’s needs.

What is Sheppard Pratt?

In addition to a comprehensive mental health evaluation, all residents receive a diagnosis and psychiatric consultation during their stay. Some of the therapies offered at Sheppard Pratt include 1-on-1 therapy, group therapy, family therapy, DBT, psychopharmacological interventions, and psychodynamic therapy. Sheppard Pratt also provides a wide array of holistic and experiential therapies and activities like rock climbing, yoga, art therapy, acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, and equine-assisted therapy. There are 35 hours of group and family therapy each week. Their experienced team consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, therapists, social workers, and nurses. Sheppard Pratt was one of the first sites to use transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to tackle treatment-resistant depression. They continue to conduct research on site.#N#Since 1853 when Sheppard Pratt was founded, they have remained steadfast in upholding their guiding mission and values and Quaker heritage. The Quaker testimonies of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and equality drive not only their core values, but their guiding principles, as well. Their founder, Moses Sheppard, had a deep concern for social justice, and his charter for the asylum was granted in 1853. Upon his death in 1857, Sheppard left his entire fortune to the building of The Sheppard Asylum. His gift of $571,441.41 was the largest bequest ever made to mental health at that time. Finally, after 34 years of construction, on December 6, 1891, The Sheppard Asylum opened its doors, in Towson, MD, on a 340-acre campus where it still stands today.
