As little as two coats can make a durable glossy finish, but I like to take it out to 4-6 or even 8 for a deep luster. For guns, I personally prefer the satin finish from buffing it out after the last coat, but then I'm a softy for that old-world look when I'm building a new rifle stock.

What is tru-oil made of?

Tru-Oil is basically linseed, plus other oils, plus mineral spirits, and I've been told that all the non-drying elements have been removed from the mixture. The secret to using it, if there is one, is to get the finish in the wood, not on the wood. This is why some people thin it, to make it penetrate better.

I've got some of this stuff, works great. But I use Obenaufs HD more. Being in CA though I don't have to worry as much about rust, usually cutting food is good enough.

Never tried ballistol. I really don't have a ton of stuff that needs protecting as I'm not a collector. But, what I like about the wax is that it dries...er....dry. Even the slightest bit of oil can stain a case, my pants, etc.

ozbushy Member

That was always my fear. But I continued to read accounts of using it on wood. So I tentatively waded in and tried it on a few smaller things. My experience has been that the initial application and for a brief period after leaves a somewhat slick surface.

Bump... this came up again in my search for something to clean / protect old firearms without taking away from their original finish. Renaissance wax seems to be the sheeit.

It's fantastic, and a tiny amount goes a stupid-long way. I've had a 200ml jar since frickin' high school and it's only a third empty.

What are you guys using to apply it??? Recommends a lint free cloth right?

I use Obenauf’s Heavy Duty LP on my boots. It’s the best I’ve used so far.

Sticky and dusty – not very appealing.

Shaping the Spring

Start with a flat piece of annealed spring steel and lay out all of the lines and any screw holes the spring may need. If you are lucky enough to have the broken spring or a copy of the one you need, take measurements and transcribe them to your working piece using layout fluid.

Hardening Gun Springs

To heat-treat flat gun springs, evenly heat the steel up to a bright or cherry red using a carburizing flame and quench in oil. That is the simplest way to describe the process, but there is a lot to consider when doing it.

Tempering Gun Springs

Tempering a gun spring is not that difficult once you have a little practice. The tempering process creates toughness and flexibility and reduces hardness and brittleness. Prior to tempering, use a wire brush or wheel to clean any scaling off of the spring.

Testing the Gun Spring

Testing a spring is always a little nerve-wracking. Although it isn’t that hard to make one, you’ve probably been told over and over again how difficult it can be. Some people, including myself, will make two or three of the same springs every time. That way I have two spares in case something happens to the first one.
