What Is a Box Valance Called?
There are many different terms thrown around, but generally speaking, they mean the same thing. Cornice board, valance, window box… A cornice board window box is mounted above a window and is often made from wood such as plywood then covered in batting and fabric and mounted to the wall. It can be mounted over drapery or blinds.

How to Make a Window Valance Box
1. You must first determine what size of cornice box you want. Personally, I like to mount the cornice board as close to the ceiling as possible to give the room some height so it appears the windows are taller than they actually are. Our ceilings in the bedroom is only 8’ high, so we can use the appearance of taller ceilings.

The benefit of making your window valance box out of foam is it’s so lightweight and easy to hang! You don’t even need wall anchors. I hot glued two hooks on the back of the cornice so it could simply clip up on two nails in the wall.

To make a window valance/cornice box/pelmet box from foam insulation, here is what you need:
Measuring the Foam Insulation
The first step is determining how big you want your window valances to be. I like mine to extend at least 5 inches beyond the window on each side and measure at least 12″ tall. We have incredibly high ceilings in this house, so I decided on a height of 15″ for my boxes this time.
Cutting & Assembling the Window Valance Box
Admittedly, the hardest and most time-consuming part of the whole project is cutting the foam insulation. Even with using an electric cutting knife (like the kind you’d use on a turkey), it can be very messy and slow going.
Wrapping & Hanging the Valance Box
With the foam box assembled, the last step is to wrap it in batting (to give it an upholstered look) and fabric. I recommend securing one then the other (rather than trying to do both materials at once), as working around the corners can be quite tricky.

2 packs of Ikea curtains or other inexpensive curtains ( see how to save money on curtains here ). Two panels will be for the curtains, and one panel will be for the box valance.

1.) Assemble the MDF Box. We wanted a light but stiff box that would maintain its shape. While some people chose to make their’s out of poster board, I wanted one that would last years, so we went with MDF which is cheaper than plywood.

Measure Window
Measure width of the window frame, adding two inches to each side. Buy a 2x4 for this length.
Add Hook & Loop Tape
Attach hook and loop tape (smooth side) to the front and ends of the 2x4. Secure with a staple gun.
Place 2x4
Install angle brackets on each side of the window frame, flush with the top. Place 2x4 on top of brackets, attaching with screws.
Prep Fabric
Measure from top of window frame down to where you want the valance to hang. Trim fabric to vertical and horizontal lengths, leaving one extra inch on the top, bottom and sides. Fold fabric over on every side and hem with fusible web, making sure iron is set to no steam. Iron out any wrinkles.
Hang Finished Valance
Glue grab side of hook and loop tape along the top, backside of finished fabric, then secure to the front of the 2x4. Make multiple valances and easily swap out as desired.
