First, run a wire from the generator to the conduit in the generator room. How it works: go to the conduit and highlight the wire--not the conduit--and make sure the reticle pip is over the conduit while the wire is still highlighted. Press your Attach Wire button or key--the option won't appear in the menu but it will work.

If you've done it correctly the wire will flicker and you'll hear the fizzing sound but you will not see a wire trailing from the conduit. This is normal. Go to wherever you want to attach it to and attach it like normal. Any length you want, through walls, floors, the ground, whatever. I usually string wire from the atrium roof to the water pump because it sags like crazy when it gets that long.
Can you snap a power connector into the outside of a vault?
Later, after I had built up more vault near the other entrance to the purifier cavern, I just ran a short wire from there to the purifier. Once you realize you can snap atrium wall pieces to the outside of your vault and then snap a power connector into those walls, wiring up devices external to your vault, like the purifier or some missile turrets, becomes very simple.

You plant the vault conduit panel on a wall to hook wires too. The conduit panels act just like wire conduit do radiating power (still need wires for some stuff) except the floors are the wiring.

Honestly they even have a hydroponics sign so you can make a room and put planters down in it. It's what I did. Have a couple people growing plants and the rest doing experiments and guard duty. Plus have a bunch of turrets ready to attack anything. Guessing if enemies do attack they'll magically spawn inside your vault rooms.
