What has the National Treatment Purchase Fund done for You?

This year is the third anniversary of the National Treatment Purchase Fund (NTPF). A Government initiative, its primary objective was to reduce the waiting times of patients for treatment on public hospital waiting lists. At the end of August (the latest figures available), more than 34,000 patients had been treated by the fund.

What is the criteria for NTPF funded treatment?

The key criteria of the NTPF is the prioritisation of the longest waiting patients first. While the NTPF identifies patients eligible for NTPF treatment, it is solely on the basis of their time spent on the Inpatient/Daycase Waiting List. The clinical suitability of the patient to avail of NTPF funded treatment is determined by the public hospital.

How do private hospitals get paid by the NTPF?

Where the NTPF has arranged for treatment of patients by private hospitals, the private hospitals will seek payment of the fees from the NTPF and will issue an invoice to the NTPF together with a discharge summary. This will include the patient’s name, date of birth, treatment received, date of treatment, and discharge details.
