What is STP and how does it work?

I used to see it at K-Mart, but never tried it -- even as a new driver, I didn't think any oil could go even 10k miles, let alone 50K. Reactions:

It's all petered out since then - they don't sell oil anymore, andf their oil and fuel treatments are just cash-cows for Clorox - there's no real 'research' or passion to them ...
