What is the active ingredient in Herceptin?
The active ingredient in Herceptin is called trastuzumab. It is an antibody protein that has been designed specifically to target HER2-overexpressing cancers. When Herceptin is injected into your bloodstream the trastuzumab it contains attaches to the HER2 on the surface of your cancerous cells. This blocks the HER2 and stops it being stimulated by the human epidermal growth factor in your blood. This has been shown to stop the cancerous cells multiplying, preventing the spread of your cancer and making it easier to kill – usually with other treatments like chemotherapy. There is also evidence that suggests when trastuzumab attaches to the outside of a cancerous cell it triggers the immune system to kill the cell.
