After 10 minutes, the medicine is rinsed off. Nix Creme Rinse® kills lice, but not the nits. It is the favored medicine because it may continue to kill newly hatched lice for a few days after treatment. A second treatment is needed on day 9 to kill newly hatched lice.

How long do you leave the Nix lice treatment on?

The instructions say that you're to saturate the hair with the NIX lice treatment, leave on for ten minutes and rinse out. The permethrin is supposed to kill the live head lice (the crawling insects). Then you’re instructed to do a thorough nit-combing, to remove all the nits.

How long does it take for lice treatment to work?

If a few live lice are still found 8–12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not retreat. The medicine may take longer to kill all the lice. Comb dead and any remaining live lice out of the hair using a fine–toothed nit comb.

Do NITs and head lice go away on their own?

Unfortunately, nits and head lice have built up a resistance to these products, so they're not always all killed. To ensure you don't get a re-infestation, it's important to make sure all the nits are dead after a treatment. It only takes one nit to mature and lay more eggs to start off the whole process again, so check after every treatment.

How long do lice live on humans?

As long as there’s a food source readily available, an adult louse can live for as long as 30 days on a human. However, lice can continue to multiply. Female lice lay up to six eggs each day. Although lice can spread on inanimate objects, they won’t spread between you and your pets. Even pets with hair, like dogs and cats, don’t spread lice.

How long does lice stay alive after treatment?

Head lice survive less than one or two days if they fall off the scalp and cannot feed. Head lice eggs (nits) cannot hatch and usually die within a week if they do not remain under ideal conditions of heat and humidity similar to those found close to the human scalp.

How long do lice stay alive on bedding?

Just like with mattresses, lice can only live on any bedding—whether it's sheets, pillows, or comforters—for 1-2 days. Without a human scalp as a source for food (blood) for longer than 1-2 days, lice cannot survive.

How do you know lice is gone?

After each treatment, checking the hair and combing with a nit comb to remove nits and lice every 2–3 days may decrease the chance of self–reinfestation. Continue to check for 2–3 weeks to be sure all lice and nits are gone.

Do I need to wash bedding everyday with lice?

In particular, you should change the bedding every single day until your house is free from lice. If even just a few nits remain alive, a re-infestation can occur. When an adult louse lives on a human host, it can live for up to 30 days.
