Can you have PANDAS for years?

Although it may take time, most children who have PANDAS recover completely with treatment. Symptoms tend to slowly get better over several months once the strep infection clears, but there may be ups and downs. PANDAS is likely to come back if your child gets strep again.

What happens if PANDAS go untreated?

Symptoms of PANDAS can leave your child unable to function at school or in social situations. Untreated, symptoms of PANDAS may continue to worsen and can result in permanent cognitive damage. For some children, PANDAS can become a chronic autoimmune condition.

Can PANDAS be diagnosed years later?

PANS & PANDAS are overlooked medical conditions that can lead to these changes in thinking and behavior. Unfortunately, these neuroimmune conditions are often not recognized, and it can often take years and multiple doctors visits for children to get a proper diagnosis.

Can PANDAS symptoms come and go?

In PANDAS, symptoms come on abruptly (flare) and remit. This may come in cycles and include mental health disturbances, physical symptoms and behavioral issues.

Can you have mild PANDAS?

Mild: Symptoms are significant and cause disruptions at home and/or school. They occupy a few hours a day. The PANDAS Physicians Network (PPN) flowcharts for diagnosis and treatment will help clinicians evaluate their patients and determine the best course of treatment.

What is the prognosis for PANDAS?

What is the prognosis for a child with PANS/PANDAS? For children who are diagnosed early and a cause has been identified, the prognosis can be very good. Some patients respond quickly and are back to 100 percent normal function, but that doesn't happen for everybody.

Can PANDAS persist into adulthood?

PANDAS occurs in adults. Period. If an adult can acquire Rheumatic Fever or Glomerulonephritis after a strep infection, that adult can acquire PANDAS. If an adult can acquire Lyme disease, mycoplasma, and a myriad of viral infections, that adult can acquire PANDAS.

Why is PANDAS controversial?

Still, PANDAS has attracted a vocal band of proponents who have proposed it as a catchall for a wide range of mental health issues sometimes lumped under the broader term 'autoimmune encephalopathy. ' The list of purported triggers has grown from strep to include Lyme disease, mononucleosis and herpes.

How do you treat PANDAS naturally?

They can be found in the form of dietary supplements as well as in foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi. One way that probiotics may be helpful for PANDAS is in preventing digestive problems due to antibiotics, a common treatment for PANDAS. Research has found that probiotics show promise for this purpose.

While strep is the initial trigger, PANDAS patients can have recurrent symptom exacerbations (flares) later in the disease when exposed to other (non-strep) infections.
