Can fuel additives cause check engine light?
The oxygen sensor allows your vehicle to monitor fuel consumption. Over time, the oxygen sensor can become caked with combustion elements such as oil ash, sulfur, and fuel additives. These contaminants can cause the oxygen sensor to perform inadequately, leading to a check engine light.
What does it mean when your check engine light comes on and then goes off?
A check engine light will shut itself off if the condition that caused it is remedied. So, if your converter is marginal, and you did a lot of stop-and-go driving, which creates high demand for the converter, that may have turned on the check engine light.

What is the most common cause of check engine light?
The top 25 repairs account for 62% of all check engine repairs in the United States. Replacing a faulty oxygen sensor — a sensor used to optimize a vehicle's fuel-to-air mixture to increase gas mileage and reduce emissions — is the most common cause for a check engine light.
How long do you have to drive to reset engine light?
about 50 to 100 milesHere's something you probably don't know: after clearing the car's computer you will need to drive for about 50 to 100 miles. As you drive your car the computer will monitor all the sensors and register the results.
How long does it take for engine light to reset?
The car's internal computer only resets after a set period where it checks all of its sensors once more. The reset can happen automatically after around 10 to 20 cycles. A cycle is a phase where you turn on the car and turn it off again. For other vehicles, you'll have to drive around 50 to 100 miles before it resets.
Do engine codes clear themselves?

What happens if a sensor suggests too much or too little oxygen in the exhaust?
If a sensor suggests too much or too little oxygen in the exhaust, the computer may override its calculations and correct the situation. Such could be the case if an intake manifold gasket were starting to leak, or if spark plugs become worn. This feature allows the PCM to adapt to various conditions. It also isolates the driver from feeling the symptoms of the problem.

We start a new drive cycle and if the test that turned the light on does not run the MIL may turn off. This does not suggest we have solved the problem.
Can an EGR valve be bad?

most of the time it is because the gas cap isn't on tight. Make sure it is and sometimes the light will go out in an hour or so. The loose cap tells the computer that there is a vapor leak which causes the warning light to come on..My car repair man told me this and it did take care of the problem. Hope this helps..

there is a vapour purge line from the tank to a charcoal cannister. The line& cannister has been contaminated with liquid gas. When the engine attempts a normal purge from cannister it gets loaded with raw gas, causing rough running and cherck engine light. Replace cannister. Never over fill gas tank, especially on hot sunny days
